My best part of my PhD thesis is probably the paper on rising 'ja' (yes) and 'nej' (no) in Danish). It shows that these are used for affiliation in contrast to the 'normal' versions with level intonation. But it also shows how the rising pitch often (cor)responds to a wide pitch span in the previous turn, as part of making affiliation relevant.
Now your can get a version of this on ResearchGate (AAM, before layout and proofs)

Really nice work combining a study of pronouns in Jaru (a language of Australia) with a study of gaze: how do speakers use eye gaze and pointing to distinguish between inclusive/exclusive dual/plural 'we'?

Working on some cases of #laughter in conversation... the more I look, the more amazing it is. Here's how one of my PhD students (a musician) transcribed one of the laughter bouts we have. I'm not a musician so I need to map it to what I can hear and see acoustically... #phonetics #emca #conversationanalysis

Time for another #introduction! This one is about my research.
I'm a #linguist. My research combines #phonetics and conversation analysis. I'm interested in sounds we make while talking that aren't speech sounds, like clicks and swallows.
I'm working on a third edition of my textbook Introduction to English Phonetics. I'm trying to diversify the voices represented in it, as well as update it with new stuff.
Gathering of conversation analysts in Loughborough today with a cake competition (CAkeoff). Whoever made this icing needs a prize. #CADAY2022 #EMCA #ConversationAnalysis #cake
A year ago The Handbook of Phonetics arrived in the post, with my chapter on the #phonetics of talk interaction. I usually struggle to write but this one was a pleasure. (There’s another chapter in its way about methodology, for another project.)
@mncantarutti and I are running a workshop in March on the phonetics of talk in interaction, mostly aimed at #EMCA people. https://www.york.ac.uk/business/cpd/courses/phonetics-of-talk-in-interaction/
Along with my colleague @mncantarutti@mstdn.social we'll be teaching a professional development course next year on the #phonetics of talk in interaction. More information below!

Also director of the Humanities Research Centre at York, a job I'm enjoying hugely.
Currently wondering how I might use Mastodon, so mostly lurking, but happy to poke my head out of my shell now and again.
