The Oudemanhuispoort courtyard is a hidden gem in the city center. Tucked between Kloveniersburgwal and Oudezijds Achterburgwal, it’s part of a 17th-century complex originally built as a shelter for the elderly. Now owned by the University of Amsterdam, it hosts the Faculty of Humanities and student housing. 👩‍🎓🧑‍🎓🏛️📚

The courtyard is accessed through a covered passage known for its secondhand book market. Midway, a door opens to the quiet garden with benches, a lawn, and rose bushes… A calm escape in the heart of the city. 🌹

This #iconic #8bit #retrocomputer #vector #illustration is a #resolutionindependent #tribute to the most sold #computer model, everrr. Until 1988 #Commodore sold more #C64 #homecomputers than all #IBM compatible #PC's combined. While the #DTP #revolution was in full swing on #Apple #Macintosh #computers, some school #newspapers been created with #Pagefox back then.

PixelfedITs History! (@gfkDSGN@pixelfed.social)1982 Commodore introduced the computer for the masses not the classes... “It writes, rates, creates, even telecommunicates. Costs less does more — the #Commodore64” This outstanding #homecomputer came with #8bit #MOS6510 #CPU, 64KB RAM and #BASIC. Initially the #C64 was sold for a little under 600 bucks, but competition was brutal in the #8bit-war. https://youtu.be/E9nDsIvUto4 With prices dropping #Commodore sold two million units annually and had a market share up to 40% in the US until 1986. At one point, the company was selling as many C64s as the rest of the industry combined. Even when #IBM #PC 5150 compatible #16bit systems changed that in 1988, the #C=64 became highest-selling computer model of all time. In the middle of the city’s ‘Red Light District’ stands the “Oude Kerk”, the city’s oldest building, founded in 1️⃣3️⃣0️⃣6️⃣. Its vast wooden ceiling, gives the Gothic interior a unique atmosphere. 🧖‍♀️🕯️

The church shifted from Catholic to Protestant after the 1️⃣5️⃣7️⃣8️⃣ Reformation. Many locals were buried here, including some prominent figures, like Saskia van Uylenburgh, Rembrandt’s wife. 🪦☠️ 🎨

Now a cultural venue, it hosts exhibitions, concerts & art. Though no longer used for services, its historic soul remains alive at the Oudekerksplein. ⛪

Evening falls in London's Trafalgar Square, one of the capital's great meeting places.
In the foreground the silhouetted bronze statue of George IV by Sir Francis Legatt Chantrey.
Originally, the impressive sculpture, which depicts the King dressed in ancient Roman attire and riding bareback, was going to be placed on top of Marble Arch, but was placed in its current location following the King's death.
On a somewhat lighter note, Nelson's Column always reminds me of one of my favourite children's TV programmes, in particular, the one that featured presenter John Noakes scaling its dizzy heights to help clean off the pigeon poo!
