What's happening to my medical students this year? Why are they so nice?

Today, a student who missed the first two classes showed up. She explained that she has a high Eiken level (it's a Japanese test about English) so she doesn't have to take the class. However, she decided to attend despite alright having the credits for it because her friends told her it was fun. 😮

This is a TOEIC class. It's not supposed to be fun. It's supposed to be the most boring English class on campus!

In my Thursday afternoon class, I have a student with diabetes. So, there are special rules for her, namely, she's allowed to eat and drink as much as she wants in class (it is in theory not allowed). I've always been warned that she could pass out at any time.

Today, in the middle of the class, I saw her head slowly going down as if she was losing consciousness.

In an interdisciplinary Masters-level class at RWTH Aachen, I taught construction, architecture, mechanical and other students how to clone and run Python/NodeJS repositories from GitHub.

One of the projects was based on using a music visualiser to create music animations. At this link, you can find what the students created: diraneyya.github.io/deep-music

The website provides a showdown of all the visualizations created by the DSSIPD WiSe 2021/2022 students in the CR-Masters program in the RWTH Aachen university.

Today in the classroom:

First year #chemistry is practicing identifying redox reactions from oxidation numbers.

Second year chem is finishing their buffers investigation and doing a bunch of math.

#Webdev is languishing, so I'm trying to help them get this project over the finish line before the long weekend.

Trump administration considering issuing #executiveorder to integrate #artificialintelligence into #K12 #education, according to a draft circulated by #WhiteHouse to several federal agencies, obtained by #WashingtonPost. Under the draft executive order federal agencies would be instructed 2 take steps 2 train students in using #AI and incorporate it into #teaching related tasks. The agencies would also be asked to partner w the #privatesector [surprise] to develop relevant programs in #schools

Today in the classroom:

First year #chemistry is exploring oxidation and reduction with a potato battery (Zn + Cu redox). They're also practicing oxidation states.

Second year chem is exploring buffers with a cookbook lab. Tomorrow, they make their own buffer.

#Webdev is putting together their refactored sites based on the large group audit.

Are #ChatGPT and co harming human intelligence?

This #Guardian article makes much reference to #IQ measures. In my view IQ is a measure of how good a person is at IQ tests. And I have great doubts as to the meaning of #Pisa testing.

Disclaimer: I was not good at IQ tests and I have a short attention spa ooh look a squirrel.
