#WordWeavers 29th January: What's a mistake your MC would make twice without realising it?

Hmm. Now, there's a question. Given that I'm nearing the end of a trilogy, there aren't too many mistakes my characters will make again (if they do, what have they learned, eh?)

fMC Llew is pretty good at learning from mistakes. Just a couple of times she's forgotten she's still carrying an injury and has touched someone weaker than her, at that time, draining some life energy off them. She feels stink, but it hasn't been detrimental, at least.

mMC Jonas, on the other hand … He has repeatedly trusted his half-brother, even after Braph has demonstrably shown that he can't be trusted. Jonas lets his desire *to be able to* trust his brother overshadow the truth. And, too often, it has been Llew who paid the price for that trust. I'm trying to think how many times he's made that mistake … a good few. The first 2 or 3 times he probably didn't realise at the time it was a mistake. He knows now. And it probably makes it worse that he has made the mistake while being aware that it was probably a mistake … What can he say? He just really wanted Braph to be the big brother Jonas thought he could be.

#WritersCoffeeClub Jan 24th: How long is the longest story you’ve ever written? Can you link to it?

I'm still working on it, if we're meaning a single story even over several books.

My longest single book is a little over 138k words, which is part of a bigger story, as it's the 2nd book in a trilogy with the following lengths:

Book 1 (Healer's Touch): ~110k

Book 2 (Warrior's Touch): ~ 138k

Book 3 (Magician's Touch): 124k+ and still being written.

So, the total story is sitting at around 372k words and I expect it to be about 15k more.

Can I link to it? Sure, in a bunch of places (both free & paid). Might as well start at my website, though: deberelene.com/

#WordWeavers 24th Jan: What about your antagonist (re: traditional or change)?

Braph is also a mover and shaker, so I guess that means that no matter who wins out, the world is going to shift.

He would proclaim himself to be a man of peace. The only thing is that many will have to die to achieve the peace he has in mind.

He's also unlikely to ever be satisfied. Every time he achieves a goal, or hits a new high, he looks for the next one. It's just a shame people have to be hurt in the process.

I bring you urban fantasy/queer historical romance set in the late 1960s! It's a little creepy, funny, a little (lot) sweet, and just a touch of mythology as a treat.

Also including:
* Librarians and archivists
* Shakespeare jokes
* Demons
* Talking to buildings
* Spiders
* Compost zombies

People who liked A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske or KJ Charles's Magpie books will enjoy them.

I write (frequently queer) fantasy fiction with entertaining characters, enjoyably perilous adventures, romantic entanglements, some dark undertones, but always happy, hopeful endings. I have standalones, duologies, and a YA fairytale-inspired trilogy.

They’re available in ebook, including on Kobo Plus, Everand, and Hoopla, and the most recent are also in print. You can read more about them on my website:

or find your preferred retailer here:

My latest book is The Use of Myriad Arts, a follow-up to my most popular book, The Uses of Illicit Art. It’s a romantic historical fantasy about a pregnant amnesiac firestarter in the Victorian era.
