In this close-up photo, you can see that San Pedro cacti 🌵 have 6 to 8 ribs. The plant grows more ribs as it gets bigger. Of course the symbolic of the number of ribs can be of importance during ceremonies. I heard some have as many as 13, 17...!

Notice also the nice green-blue colour.

New thread 🧵! I want to talk about San Pedro, the cactus 🌵.

It's a plant medicine that is very dear to me because of its capacity to open your heart.

It grows in the mountain regions of the Andes, especially in Ecuador, Peru and Colombia.

San Pedro is used for different closely related cacti. Here is a photo of Trichocereus macrogonus var. pachanoi I took in a botanical garden in Quito..

The ayahuasca has cooled down and is ready. It's around 8pm, the ceremony will start soon, the medicine man has already set up the altar in the maloca. Sacred and meaningful objects are placed in its centre (tobacco, feather fans, containers, icons...).

I can feel nervousness and excitement in my belly.

Let's talk about the preparation of ayahuasca. What is ayahuasca?
It is a brew made of the ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi, on the left) and the leaves of chacruna (Psychotria viridis, on the right). Both growing natively in the Amazon.
I took these photos in the state of Acre in Brazil.
