Chaves Emergency Management Due to the ongoing Flooding in Chaves County, Shelter-in-Place and stay off the roads, allowing emergency crews to work. Rescue efforts are ongoing ONLY use 911 for emergencies! Additional Flooding is expected in the afternoon today. If you are under an evacuation order leave NOW. An evacuation shelter has been established at the Eastern NM State Fair Grounds

Cit of Roswell 10/20/24 0930am MT: "...Many motorists became stranded when their vehicles got stuck in flood waters on many streets. Some people had to await rescue on top of their vehicles that were covered by water. Some vehicles were swept by the water into the river channel. One fatality has been confirmed as a result of the flooding. Search-and-rescue efforts are still underway this morning. ..."

North Central Chaves County in southeastern New Mexico... * Until 1015 PM MDT. * At 722 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 2.25 and 3 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 0.25 to 1 inch are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. ... Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Mainly rural areas of North Central Chaves County. This includes Highway 285 between Mile Markers 123 and 145.
