Disappointed to see #Sheffield dairy farm Our Cow Molly buying into completely unsubstantiated right wing conspiracy theories about Bovaer. The video they've linked to takes safety issues when handling the raw substance and tries to conflate it to the far lower concentrations that go into the cattle feed. There's also no evidence that it ends up in the milk, or that it negatively affects milk yields.
They're also buying into the campaign wealthy landowners are mounting against Labour's removal of farmers' exemption from inheritance tax in a big way, with banners on display. Guess I'll be finding somewhere else to get my milk and ice cream.
#2025 is a critical year for #climate #tech
1. #GreenSteel: #Steel is a crucial material for buildings and vehicles, and making it accounts for around 8% of global #greenhousegas #emissions.
2. #Cow burp remedies: a feed additive called #Bovaer from DSM-Firmenich that the company says can cut #methane emissions by 30% in dairy #cattle.
3. Cleaner jet fuel: New fuels, today mostly made from waste products like used cooking oil, can cut down emissions from air travel.

Why misinformation about a cow feed additive prompted people to throw milk away?
In Dec 2024, posts about #Bovaer went viral, with concerns over its safety and calls for boycotts. Some even promoted raw(unpasteurized) milk consumption instead—a risky trend linked to food poisoning outbreaks. Misinformation and threats of a boycott were particularly widespread in the U.K.
A plan to introduce Bovaer into U.K. cattle feed to reduce methane emissions has prompted a wave of disinformation. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/commentary/2024/12/16/world/sanitizing-cow-burps/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #commentary #worldnews #agriculture #greenhousegasses #climatechange #cows #bovaer
So it is thumbs up for #Bovaer in many places. But so expensive that milk/etc producers ask for extra money. And even getting it. "for climate's sake". Just another #racket in the #food business. For farts's sake! Just another product that if someone suggested it 20 years ago, ppl would have been laughed at. Methane fart inhibitor ftw! What a shit show. Forced down our throats.

All the hysteria about #bovaer is particularly ridiculous given that cattle feed in the UK can already legally be 0.15% plastic https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/dec/15/legal-plastic-content-in-animal-feed-could-harm-human-health-experts-warn and dairy cattle are being fed all sorts of antibiotics for mastitis. It's so bizarre that everyone's up in arms about something actually well tested just because it's new, but seem to assume what cattle were eating already must be harmless.
#Bovaer "Door inademing of aanraking kan schade ontstaan aan voortplantingsorganen en de vruchtbaarheid, stellen die in bijsluiters."
Gelukkig zijn er gezonde plantaardige alternatieven voor zuivel en kaas.
#MilkAndMore have emailed to emphasise they would never feed their cows #Bovaer and they don't care how much methane they emit. Or something like that. We have already replaced most of our weekly use with #Oatly, may have to consider the residual order. (which we kept in case milk needed for baking, and also to stay in the loop with one of the very few return and refill systems functioning in this country)
This so so weird. Methane-reducing feed additives for cattle such as Bovaer have the potential to make really useful reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from the dairy industry.
We should be welcoming them with open arms.
And yet there are rampant conspiracy theories about them and people boycotting them.
Why? It makes absolutely no sense to me.
Maybe some of the people terrified of #bovaer will turn to veganism or at least give up dairy products as a result? That should also appeal to their apparent health consciousness. Hehehe
apparently the cookers are getting over excited about "Bovaer" some supplement that bill gates (ugh) invested in to reduce methane emissions in dairy cattle.
