A Yellow-tailed black cockatoo in flight, seen from slightly below as it banks towards a landing in a tree. The bird's tail is widely spread, showing its pale yellow, black-tipped tail feathers, while its wings are raised high on an up-beat. Although its body is turned slightly away from us, the bright yellow patch on its cheek is clearly visible.

A glossy ibis in a steep banking turn, low over marshy tropical wetland. The bird is flying right to left, wings fully spread and tilted towards us. Thanks to the angle of the shot, its legs are completely hidden, so its outline looks like some sort of experimental airframe, or perhaps a living pterodactyl of some kind.

Flocks of two different species—egret and glossy ibis—taking off simultaneously from shallow wetlands. The egrets are white, and the glossy ibis look black, creating a strange mixed flock. Meanwhile numerous herons of different species continue to forage amongst the dead reeds and grass. Behind the birds a large expanse of flat wetland stretches out to a distant treelike.

A pied heron in flight very close to the waters of a lagoon. The bird has a black head with black plumes, white neck and black wings, and its wings are curved down and forwards at the bottom of a powerful downbeat. Below it the lagoon's shallows are punctuated with short reeds and grass, while in deeper water further in the background are many white flowering water-lilies.

Doves of the coast

Some gulls are like street pigeons. They flock to urban coastal areas and eat anything humans drop (sometimes before they drop it). The main difference is that gulls (mostly) prefer to swoop in from the air, while pigeons (mostly) like to stay on the ground.

This black-headed gull found something near my feet that I had not noticed. I wondered why it (and then 20 others) swooped down at me, as I had nothing edible with me.
