Emeritus Prof Christopher May

Tonight on Stacy Solomon Sorts Your Life Out (which incidentally shows Stacy as a really humane & compassionate person), they transferred a family's belongings to a warehouse to sort out the masses of things littering their house - the show requires them to shed 50% of their belongings, if you've not seen it and....

the family had (and it was treated as a shocker) 552 books.....

Well, if they think that's a lot they need to see my house!

@bookstodon

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon 552 books? Those poor people! Someone should get them some more books!

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon I can imagine the utter bewilderment they'd express if they were faced with my 3.5k+ :-)

@bellinghwoman @bookstodon

Likewise; I sold/disposed of 3500 books when I retired (and that was just from my office at work).... back at home, well you can guess

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon Wasn't there a survey a few years ago, and the average number of books per household in the UK was something like 10 ... which makes me wonder how many book-free households there are [shudder] !

@imbrium_photography @ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon People whose homes are open to the public are often told not to have books in the public rooms; they intimidate people 😬

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon the idea of them removing all the books from my house only for me to have to haul them back is somewhat disturbing

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon
Interesting, years ago I came across literacy study that found one simple predictor of a child's literacy levels was the number of books in the home.

@jwi @bookstodon

Sounds right; the more there are, the more you might wonder (as a child) what was in them....

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon and all those books would come home with me, or it would become a documentary about a mass murder of a tv presenter and technical staff.....

@HighlandLawyer @Thebratdragon @ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon
Your post reminds me of my youngers years. Look up Liddle Towers, then ask me, if necessary, where I come from.

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon
Mine too. We are just moving and one of the biggest problems is the number of books we have. I have 650 documented, and my wife must have just as many undocumented.
The first priority is reassembling the bookcases, otherwise we are just creating more obstacles for inconsequential things like beds.

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon Some (quite a few!) years ago, there was an article in a Sunday supplement saying you could tell a person's social class by how many books they had. So, OK, my parents were both from working class families, were the first in their generation to go to university; so I should probably be C1/C2, OK? Target: 150 books (I think). I laughed hollowly & started counting. I STOPPED counting at about 1500, & hadn't actually counted ALL the books. And I've accumulated more since then... (And the stupid council officer last year said (predictably): 'Oh, you've got a lot of books, haven't you. Have you read them all? You could take them to a charity shop...' I nearly decked her.)

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon

I have been trying to manage down my books because at some point a friend who doesn't read science fiction, fantasy, crime, etc. will have to dispose of them.
I started with what, to most of my other friends, is a modest library of about 1,500 books. So far I've got rid of less than 50, and bought at least 10 new ones.
I daren't go into bookshops just to wander around when travelling.

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon

Books are never litter. I've got 300-400 of them in my small flat and they're all on shelves.

I broke bad with my local charity shop when I realised they only display the sort of middle of the road books that get recommended on daytime television. The interesting donations may go to other shops or are dumped, so the manager told me.

They'll get nothing more from me. Now I secretly infiltrate unwanted books onto the public library shelves when the staff aren't there.

@oakelmash @ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon we had a tornado about a decade back and I needed to put stuff in pods while we put a roof back on. (An important part of a building, I’m given to understand.) Just the books I kept took an entire shipping container. I am a book goblin. 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️. When the tiny house craze was huge, and said something about building one and he just laughed and said we’d need two just for my reading room. 📚
