Preparing for tomorrow

Today we went to Vasa to buy mämmi. A traditional finnish pudding made of rye malt. We will serve it tomorrow after our sound performance. The performance will deal with the term "mämmi". In Swedish and in Finnish (since we are in Finland-Sweden). Dorothee, our host also prepared her legendary eggnog. It will be wild.

The hut in the middle of the rye field..
... is progressing. Philip used more wood shingles and finished for now. The space will be used tomorrow for our upcoming sound performance and has been used in the last months already as a meeting point. We are only using material that the neighbours provided or that we found. The next part will be build when we are back in July. We called the space "Plaza del Råg" and the small path that leads to it "Råg Boulevard".

About today

We made it and arrived in Vörå at Abramsgården. Spring is here and our rye field is slowly awaking. We are now continuing to build the meeting point in the middle of the field (which we startet calling "Plaza del Råg") using material that we get from the neighbours. Today Schindeln. The cats are still tiny.

This is the first work I produced within my ongoing series "SEASCAPES" in 2020.

Portrait staged in front of a seascape without title by Karl Rohwedder-Ruge (1865-1940), dated on the first third of the 20th century. The painting is part of the collection of Nordfriesland Museum. Nissenhaus Husum. The artist is surrounded by single use plastic items typically found in public space.

SEASCAPE IV / Museum Kunst der Westküste, Föhr

Production in front of the work “Harbor Entrance” (1916) by Erich Heckel (1883–1970). The work was realized in the painting depot of Museum Kunst der Westküste (Föhr). The artist holds a 100-pound US aerial bomb under her arm which was recovered from the North Sea. The work is part of the artist´s ongoing series "Seascapes".

In the German North and Baltic Seas, there are contaminated sites of about 1.6 million tons of conventional munitions and 5,000 tons of chemical warfare agents dumped during World War II by military operations or afterwards by dumping (source: Federal Environment Agency Germany).

Display case filled with toys washed ashore the beaches of Kure and Midway Atoll and swallowed by Laysanalbatrosses. The albatrosses were found with stomachs filled with plastic objects on both atolls (Northwestern Hawaiian Islands).

HIMMELI II

In the frame of our project PRESERVED // Rågens rike / Finnland 204/25 we dealt with the traditional himmeli objects that are made of rye straw and are now used as a traditional Christmas decoration. In the former days they would be used to ask for a good harvest. In our winter chapter (November 2024) we asked the people of the area where our project is taking place (Vörå in Finland-Sweden) to join us to create a huge himmeli by using light tubes. The village came and in joint forces the ephermeral himmeli installation was created.

The whole project is carried out with the help of the village.

Our next stay will take place soon, stay tuned.

STERNTALER / THE STAR MONEY

Contemporary interpretation of the fairytale "Sterntaler" (engl. “The Star Money or Start Talers”) from the Children‘s and Household Tales of the Brothers Grimm. The artist gazes into the evening sky, where a string of Starlink satellites manufactured by SpaceX can be seen flying in a row alongside stylized stars. The work is a collaboration between Swaantje Güntzel and the Darmstadt-based photographer Andreas Zierhut. It was created during an Artist-in-Science Residency Güntzel held at the European Space Agency (ESA/ESOC) in Darmstadt in 2022, realized by Kultur einer Digitalstadt (KeD).

The work is currently on display in the exhibition "Infinity - Emptiness - Liveliness" at Planetarium Hamburg. Organized by Junge Akademie, curated by Anne Hemkendreis. The exhibition can be visited until May 31st, 2025.

Aufbau für die Gruppenausstellung PINK in der #PasingerFabrik in München. "Eine Ausstellung über die Bedeutung der Farbe in Kunst und Alltag „Pink matters“, gerade in Zeiten wie diesen! Was die Farbe in Kunst und Alltag bedeutet, ist das Thema der Ausstellung PINK, die vom 13. März bis 3. August 2025 in der Pasinger Fabrik zu sehen ist. Präsentiert werden Werke von knapp 30 Künstler*innen, begleitend gibt es ein Programm mit Tanz, Theater, Film – und Workshops, in denen die Gäste selbst künstlerisch mit der Farbe Pink experimentieren können. Bis zum Rokoko stand Pink für Männlichkeit, mit der Französischen Revolution änderte sich die Bedeutung: Männer verzichteten auf farbige Kleidung, Pink wurde von Frauen vereinnahmt. Nach dem Verkauf der ersten Barbie-Puppe 1959 in einer pinkfarbigen Verpackung wurde sie zur „Mädchenfarbe“, und in Westeuropa repräsentiert Pink nicht selten klischeeartig Weiblichkeit. Doch im Kampf für die Gleichberechtigung steht die Farbe zugleich für Empowerment und Selbstbestimmung hinsichtlich Sexualität und Lebensentwurf. Die Ausstellung reflektiert in zeitgenössischer Kunst die symbolischen Bedeutungen der Farbe wie auch deren gesellschaftliche Vereinnahmung."
