Gee, I remember when drinking beer and car burnouts were an activity that teenagers indulged in (I may have been one of them. And yes, tire pollution is nasty, but we didn't think about that back then). Do #ACAB find burnouts to be intimidating? Like shouting with a car? Did they rev their engines too?

#SalemOregon - 5 arrested as Salem rally devolves into street takeover

The gathering began as a rally against US #immigration policy

"Five Salem residents were arrested Saturday night after a peaceful rally against the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration devolved into a street takeover with burnouts, drifting and spinning.

"Initially, Salem police said in a release, the crowd gathered around noon in parking lots at the intersection of Lancaster Drive and Market Street NE to protest current US immigration policies.

"The crowd grew to about 300 people by 2 p.m. and some reports were made of #protesters throwing objects at passing cars. [What? Empty beer cans?]

"By 7 p.m., rally-goers weren’t letting traffic pass by, authorities said. Fireworks were lit and cars began reckless behavior. Officials called for more police to come to the area, which included officers on their off-days, as well as Oregon State Police and Keizer PD.

"About 90 minutes later, around 50 people were in the intersection as drivers began drifting and spinning, Salem police said. The intersection was closed off, but one car was surrounded by protesters, who also tossed water bottles and beer cans at police cars.

"Officers eventually gained control of the scene and arrested 5 people for reckless driving and disorderly conduct. The men ranged in age from 18 to 34, officials said.

"One of them, Martin Arturo Galvez-Prado, was also booked for unlawful possession of a gun.

"The streets remained closed until 11 p.m. after the crowds left and traffic diminished, police said. No one was hurt."

(Fern:) Again I remind myself that there are like 3 other people on here who live in Salem, Oregon, but...

I made a mutual aid group! I'm brand new to this type of server, but I'm hoping that if people are interested, we can figure it out together.

Clarification: this is specifically for people in Salem, Oregon.

(Fern:) To the 3 other Salem residents on here 😆

We got an email asking us to send in comments for the livability levy to save the library!

Tl;dr:
1. Send in comments before January 21
2. Send your email to cityrecorder@cityofsalem.net with a CC to citycouncil@cityofsalem.net
3. The subject line of your email should read "Public Comment for the January 21st Work Session."
4. Ask the City Council to put a Livability Levy on the May 20th ballot that will preserve and restore services at our library, parks and Center 50+

You can also come to the work session in City Council chambers at City Hall, at 6pm on Tuesday, January 21st! There won't be a comment period, but just being there shows support. Library people will be handing out stickers to wear to show your support.

(Fern:) :boost_requested: We’re still looking for people to hire! We’re looking for a Covid-cautious, PTSD-informed caregiver in Salem, Oregon for anywhere from 5 to 30 hours a week. The main tasks are housekeeping and meal prep, plus there are other tasks the caregiver can refuse. This position does NOT require experience.

If you would be willing to help us find someone, it would mean so much. These things help:
1. Sharing the Facebook post, if you use Facebook: facebook.com/share/p/3KAkcqDhM
2. Sharing the Instagram post, if you use Instagram: instagram.com/p/DBwj8qrSO9J
3. Sharing this ask in some other way - maybe sending it to someone, maybe putting it in a global Covid-caution-focused Discord, stuff like that
4. Boosting this post!!

We really need the help - I’m hoping Fedi/Mastodon can find us someone to take care of us. Thank you so much.
