Twenty years ago today I shot this clip of Michael Penn, a favorite of my mother-in-law (my wife and I were along for the ride). This was probably the visually darkest show I ever recorded, and none of my stills came out. Somehow, the post-processor I was using at the time (AviSynth) was able to get something out of the video. Before launching into this then-new song, he kind of rambles on about his obsession with 1947 (which he mentioned several times), George W. Bush (also a couple times) and an ex-girlfriend. I really don't get at all how it related to the song, which itself was pretty good.

Six Possums In A Trenchcoat

Good news! This was shot down last night by the Sun Prairie city council.

Less good news, it was largely for procedural reasons.

Right now, we only have 7 of 8 alders because one of the alders was elected as mayor. One alder wasn't present last night.

The police were requesting a budget amendment to pay for the new cameras. Budget amendments require six Yea votes to pass, regardless of how many alders are actually present (as long as there's quorum, anyway).

With six alders present, only two voted against the budget amendment, which was obviously enough to stop the expansion for now, but it likely means that it'll get funded during the next budget cycle and there's probably not a desire by the majority of the council to remove the existing cameras.

Six Possums In A Trenchcoat

The city of #SunPrairie #Wisconsin, a suburb of #Madison, is looking to double the size of its Flock ALPR camera install at the next Common Council meeting. This would expand the scope of 4th amendment violating mass surveillance and put more of our neighbors and visitors at risk of harassment or worse from the police. I've reached out to the city council and asked them to oppose this and consider removing the existing Flock cameras in the city.
