Emeritus Prof Christopher May

Its sometimes been said that rather than being a rich country, the UK is a poor country with a rich elite living in enclaves... now you might think that's a politically-driven exaggeration, but looking at new figures on the incidence of poverty you'd be hard pressed to deny there is some truth to that depiction....

The Guardian · More than one in three children in poverty as UK deprivation hits record highBy Josh Halliday

@ChrisMayLA6 I'd argue that this has been entrenched since 1066. Norman areas being wealthy and Saxon/Norse being deprived. The same families, in the same regions, holding the same wealth and patronage.

@ChrisMayLA6

Couldn’t that be said of every ’rich’ country?

@partnumber2

I guess that would be true, albeit to different extents...

@ChrisMayLA6 Really Andy Capp was a political cartoon.

@ChrisMayLA6 Theres not just the elite and the rest of us ,theres the people who are fine and dont get why anyone else isnt and assume anyone who is poor is stupid or lazy or both ,theres those who ,feel the pinch because they maybe have to cut back on buying a new car,having a holiday etc and talk about having to economise and assume everyone can just cut back on luxuries to get by ,then theres the vast number of people who cant afford to use heating or buy enough food

@LynMhairi

Yup, that sounds like the varying levels of the middle-class....
