My days of early adoption ended with SnapChat; I don't even rush to secure my username on most new platforms anymore. I'll be a reluctant follower from now on, waiting for new platforms to build audiences and offer something distinctive and worthwhile rather than jumping in to help make that happen.
Kudos to anyone still willing to beta test everything and sharing their thoughts about it here. So far, you've confirmed neither Bluesky nor Threads are for me.
Remember Vox, Storytlr, and Posterous? What about GeoCities and LiveJournal? The internet has always been ephemeral; owning your own domain and making it your hub has always been a best practice.
I wrote this back in 2010 during a similar period of platform upheaval, and despite experimenting with multiple platforms since then, my own site has been my home base since I started self-hosting WordPress sometime in 2008.
