What’s here now?First a disclaimer. I’m a leftie. I wasn’t born one. Both my parents were centre-right conservatives. Although they didn’t impose their political world view on me I couldn’t help but be aware of it. However as things turned out, as I grew and observed and experienced it just turned out that I found myself naturally on the left side of the aisle.That said I frequently find the cultural left a suffocatingly self-righteous and morally condescending place to be. It is to the left’s detriment that it has a knee-jerk hissy fit every time a point of view slightly right of centre is uttered.This reactive defensiveness has all the hallmarks of insecurity. It reminds me of the defensiveness of certain religions reacting to the assertions of militant atheism. If you’re truly comfortable and confident in your place and/ position you don’t feel the need to react defensively but instead respond calmly and confidently with your point of view without feeling the need to take the moral high ground and excoriate the other side in a virtuous zero sum game.It is from this hysterically insecure perception that any right of centre uttering is seen as nothing less than the slippery slope to Nazism. Think about it. The vast majority of politically right thinking individuals are no more willingly ushering in a new fascist dawn than most lefties are hopefully building towards Stalinism Part Deux.We all wonder why both political and cultural politics has become so polarised and it is precisely because the most insecure vocalists on both sides view the other side with such fear.For crying out loud. Calm down. Relax. Pause. Wait. Above all, just take a moment to think.I purposefully read right of centre news and opinion. I don’t agree with most of it. Much of it just ‘feels wrong’ to me. And I oppose it. Opposing what you don’t believe in is not the same as condemning it as unutterable from some imagined moral high ground made of sand. That way madness lies.
