Few-flowered leeks (Allium paradoxum) are abundant in #StAndrews and I picked loads last weekend for my 4th #StAndrewsWildFood.

Full of onion flavour, with bulbils that taste of mild garlic, you can eat the whole thing raw or cooked. We used them in fried rice, and I’ve since put some on my beans on toast for a bit of savoury flavour.

@artistsgarden We have tons of these in #StAndrews (#Scotland) and they're all coming out right now.

They seem to spread really well in some areas. As well as wild areas they're all over people's gardens.

Shout out to Toppings Bookshop in St Andrews.
After all together too much bus nonsense this afternoon, I popped in to get The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer in an attempt to redeem the afternoon.
The lovely staff found me the book and gave me a cup of tea for a much needed warm up and restoration of my faith in humans.
Felt very Serviceberry - economy of gifts and abundance appropriate.

Whalesong patterns follow a universal law of human language, new research finds

All known human languages display a surprising pattern: the most frequent word in a language is twice as frequent as the second most frequent, three times as frequent as the third, and so on. This is known as #ZipfsLaw.
In a new research published in Science, a team of experts in whale song, #linguistics and developmental #psychology analyzed eight years' of song recordings from #HumpbackWhales in #NewCaledonia. Led by Inbal Arnon from the Hebrew University, Ellen Garland from the University of #StAndrews, and Simon Kirby from the University of #Edinburgh, they used techniques inspired by the way human infants learn #language to analyze humpback #whale song.
They discovered that the same #ZipfianPattern universally found across #human languages also occurs in #WhaleSong. This complex signaling system, like human language, is culturally learned by each individual from others.

St Andrews Castle in St Andrews, Fife, which stands on a site fortified since the 1100s. From around 1200 it was the main residence of the bishops and archbishops of St Andrews and it witnessed many grim events over the centuries.
