A quotation from Whitehead

In the conditions of modern life the rule is absolute, the race which does not value trained intelligence is doomed. Not all your heroism, not all your social charm, not all your wit, not all your victories on land or at sea, can move back the finger of fate. To-day we maintain ourselves. To-morrow science will have moved forward yet one more step, and there will be no appeal from the judgment which will then be pronounced on the uneducated.

Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) English mathematician and philosopher
Speech (1916-01), “The Aims of Education — a Plea for Reform,” Presidential Address to the Mathematical Association

Early trial fitting of the next baseboard, which I designed yesterday evening and built today. This Easter has been a write-off as my partner is still in bed getting over the COVID infection I first caught over three weeks ago.

This is the first of three that will bridge the gap between the helix and the board in the back left corner of the room.

This board is in approximately the right position and the hatched area is to be cut out to ensure the board doesn’t interfere with the helix.

That’s it until the end of the week. I need to decide how this board is anchored to the helix board, and there is more than one way to do that. Needs some consideration.

@blogdiva

The problem with the #left is so many judgments out there are absolute

But the only way to get #progress in this world is to be relative:

Is someone moving in a good direction, regardless of where they are starting from?

Then you applaud that

That is true #morality

Absolutism is just ego masturbation. It doesn't change the world

So I mourn the passing of #PopeFrancis

I recognize the good he did in the confines he operated in, on issues dear to the left

And so should you

Another round of trial fitting of all the rear baseboards now that the left rear corner board is permanently installed. You can get an idea of the absolute chaos in the room with this wide-ish angle photo.

The board that isn’t in place on the left needs some small adjustments now that the corner board next to it is 2cm further forward than the others. There will also be a step in the backscene boards where these two boards meet that I will do my best to disguise with scenery.

In our 9th month of living in the Vulpibus and our car, we are still working on getting the basics up and running. We yet need to get and install enough insulation, batteries and air con to have a safely temperature controlled environment of our own in this brutal, climate change addled world. We also need to install proper plumbing and to diagnose and fix some engine problems.

We have made great progress with many things, but the journey is far from over and your help continues to be needed. We are doing what we can to find more income sources, but in the meantime you are an incredible lifeline.

It is becoming increasingly harder to imagine that things will get better.

If you’re struggling with this as well, let me be the one to try to give you a glimpse of hope: things WILL get better. I’m not saying this just out of optimism or delusion, I’m saying this with relative certainty, because we’ve been here before!

“Progress is inevitable“ - STWF Bad Ideas ep 5 ft. George Monbiot

youtube.com/watch?v=vVLNATrU6J

I like the way Monbiot frames the current situation, he's got a bit of non-doomer #capitalocene framing. It's still not critical enough for me, but I appreciate it.

Fascism is capitalism in decline, but maybe it's also carnism in decline. I'm not sure how the goal of inclusiveness and "belonging" can be met while we exclude non-human sentient individuals from moral consideration and, instead, treat them as objects, commodities and capital. It just sets up a bad culture, a bad paradigm. The reason we criticize "dehumanization" is because mainstream cultures and related civilizations treat non-humans absolutely horrible.

Raise the moral floor.

There is a cave which (was) accessed through a pipe culvert. Due to housing development, it is no longer there. It was a historic record site for cave crayfish and I think cave fish as well. The directions to where the culvert intercepts the cave are accurate, but the bottom of the pipe turns to stone, and it appears the cave was filled in.

This is obviously a horrible idea for many reasons - the selfish reason being "your house may literally cave in" as chucking limestone rock into a solution cave that is carving out limestone is obviously not going to work. In the nearby city there is a law against filling a cave because they learned quickly this is horrible structurally. But this is the county where no such regulations exist.

A classic example of how it may sound good in theory to have fewer regulations and oversight so you can "get shit done easier", but the reality is, regulations are there so you don't fuck shit up. Of course, if one also just ignores rules & regs and does whatever they want to whomever they want, we have a different kind of problem. :blobthinking:

"In a downturn, you don’t find momentum. You make it!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

In a time of volatility, uncertainty, and a lack of clarity, the most natural reaction is often the worst one: we do nothing.

We pause. We overthink. We wait for something to settle before we make a move.

We seek clarity and wait.

We end up waiting a long time - because the irony of this is that clarity doesn’t come from waiting—it comes from moving.

That's the real secret to getting through this volatile time.

Over the past eight posts, we’ve explored what it takes to lead into the future when everything feels unstable: replacing fear with action, and nostalgia with vision. Challenging inertia through innovation, and stress through strategic resilience.  Leading with agility over indecision, and thinking globally, not locally. Things like that.

But none of that matters if momentum is missing. Because without motion and moving forward, there is no forward.

That's why you need to imprint this idea in your mind. “You don’t find momentum. You make it.” The future doesn’t reward the ones who paused the longest. It rewards the ones who moved—even just a little—when no one else was.

And here's a secret you should know - progress isn’t always dramatic.

Sometimes it’s quiet, compounding, and invisible to everyone except those who kept showing up. Let me be blunt  - inaction is a decision. And it’s usually the wrong one. When volatility strikes, many leaders freeze - the exact wrong thing to do. But the organizations that keep moving build momentum that outlasts the downturn.

Why do you need momentum, even if you don't know where you are going?

→ It allows for achievements – small wins fuel bigger moves
→ It shifts your mindset – which is what you need
→ It enables refinement – progress improves as you move
→ It reveals direction – showing key trends

The key isn’t to make a massive leap. It’s to take the first step—and then another. And another. Soon you are walking into tomorrow - and then running.

You are already well into the race to the future, while the rest haven't even figured out where the starting line is.

Futurist Jim Carroll is already well into the Acceptance stage of the 7 Stages of Economic Grief because he knows that it is the only sure way to deal with the relentless uncertainty that already defines 2025.
