This year, between injuries, flares and Hail of Unusual Size, I am way behind on gardening. And by way behind, I mean, I’ve watered and waved at the beds. And yet, they love me and have started blooming, and so instead of something cynical or political, I give you Bloomscrolling. Look at these wild beauties.
Today is the day: my front yard prairie will be snow free!
... so I'm researching when I may mow to get rid of last year's growth without killing off all of the pollinators.
Internet says: no mowing in Y3 of prairie establishment; do a controlled burn instead.
Man, are my neighbours gonna love me when I burn down my front yard. And my house. And their house.

There are 14,387,941 jackrabbit poops in this front yard. [1]
Have I said that we get a lot of jackrabbits [2] in the yard in the winter here? Prairie life.
[1] Approximately.
[2] White-tailed jackrabbit, which is actually a hare, not a rabbit at all. AKA prairie hare.
We're a week into April here on the Canadian prairies [1], but it's a little different than other places. Spring isn't here, it's on the horizon. Everything's still got a blanket of snow on it, and we could easily get more [2]. There's no blooms or buds to tell you spring is on the way.
There are really only two big clues that Old Man Winter is thinking about leaving:
1. Days are noticeably longer than just a few weeks ago.
2. The jackrabbits!
They're turning brown again, losing their winter-white coat. Unfortunately it's kind of ruining their camouflage.
I find it interesting that the degree or progression of the change is so different between different individuals. I'm told the change is triggered by the lengthening days, so it's some sort of built-in variance.
These are white-tailed jackrabbits, which are actually a species of hare, not rabbit. They're the most common hare on the Canadian prairies, shown here in my backyard.
[1] It's probably a week into April where you are, too. Funny how that works.
[2] In the time I've lived in Saskatchewan, I have seen snow fall in every month of the calendar except July.
