Portrait
A month ago the first flower was opening. I thought there will be eight of them. Looks like it's going to be ten.
Have a productive and fruitful day.
Looks like this vanilla vine might be flowering soon. This is exciting because it's almost in reach and I will try to hand pollinate. Every other time I've seen vanilla flower, the flowers have been 30 feet up in a tree
Time to watch some videos on hand pollinating vanilla.
I've been slowly moving all my orchids to terra cotta pots, tired of dealing with things like this. #orchids
I have more than enough plants but I couldn't resist this pot. My husband's favorite colors together. He brought me a book on our first date and an orchid on our second date, so orchids are kind of our thing.

An diesem Wochenende sind die ersten #Orchideen im Schwarzwald aufgeblüht: das Kleine Knabenkraut oder Kleiner Hundswurz (lat. Anacamptis morio).
Today in the language of "both/and":
Imperfect and beautiful
Imperfect and vibrant
Imperfect and unique
Imperfect and... (what would you add?)
I'm a decent green thumb, but #orchids are one of those flowers I'm much better at photographing than growing. Super excited for the Orchid Fair at the #EnjoyCentre in #StAlbert this wknd. This means new work coming soon! For now, here are some shots from previous yrs, two of which were awarded as part of the Orchid Society of Alberta's juried art show in 2023.
I got my first miltonia orchid. Look at the size of this bloom!
The tag says it's miltoniopsis hajime ono 'A'.
And surprise orchids! Super late and kinda high altitude bonnet orchid as well as my first midge (background removed in an attempt to get a better ID but I have zero idea lol)
Pressing flowers for use in future art projects.
Swamp orchids (Phaius tankervilleae) are in season and they grow wild at my place, so this batch is mostly made up of them. I also included a few bamboo orchids (Arundina graminifolia), which also grow wild at our place and bloom throughout the year.
Thanks to @saltphoenix who has let me keep her flower press for aeons! Lmk if you ever want it back lol.
hi friends, i am excited to share with you a new art project i've been working on for quite some time!
it's a collage series called "propriety and grace: images of women".
TLDR: cute animals wearing elegant kimonos on beautiful orchid backgrounds.
available here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/HawaiiInks
story behind the series: i found the book "Japanese Kimono Paper Dolls" by Ming-ju Sun (published in 1986) in a thrift store & thought "i just have to use these in an art project." i decided to put these elegant kimonos on animals. at the same time, i found the book "Orchids: Wonders of Nature" by Takashi Kijima (published in 1987), and the photos turned out to make perfect backgrounds.
the title of the series ("grace and propriety: images of women") comes directly from the orchid book, where many of the orchids are described as women at various stages of life, and as various kinds of beauties (it's kind of weird). anyway, i thought it would be funny to call this series that features 0 women "images of women", but they *are* full of grace and propriety, imo! and in kimonos, they do all become ~ladies~ .
i am very happy with how these came out. i worked on them for quite some time, getting them just right, and i think that you will be happy to have any of them hanging in your home, office, etc., or given as a gift.
