The new Unreal Engine remakes/remasters of #Myst and #Riven are currently on sale in a package deal on GOG for $45, which is 20% off (still cheaper than buying them separately, even with them also on sale): gog.com/en/game/myst_riven_the

Riven has been rebuilt and redesigned from the ground up for the first time since 1997 with new content and revised puzzles, and Myst just added the Rime Age from realMYST, which has also been redesigned and expanded. Both are phenomenal games, and would still be a steal at twice the price.

#theAntiquarium Let's look at some original #Myst assets, included in StrataVision 3D's sample assets folder, shall we? Starting with the version of Sirrus's dresser from Stoneship.

See that red page? Here's its texture. I've transcribed what I can read of it in the image annotation. Isn't that interesting?

Also included is the "Topographical Extrusion Test" in the imager.

Lastly, am I the only Myst fan who had no idea how ornate Achenar's mechanized bird toy is??

Day 1: Your First Video Game

I don't exactly remember my very first video game. I think it might have been Rainbow Fish. Or Freddy Fish. Or that game with a mouse called Justine in French.

The first one that had a real impact on me and kindled my passion with video games is definitely #Myst

Awesome! Got everything working correctly under Windows 3.1. Turns out the S3 driver set I got was the correct one after all and I got glorious 1024x768 with 32k colors mode working! 🎉

It actually ran way smoother than I expected especially compared to the generic SVGA driver, though I eventually had to drop back down to 640x480 @ 256 colors for Myst.

After some trial and error I was able to get AWE64 sound working also, though I had to fool S64basic.exe installer that I already had a controller manager installed. Blasted canyon.mid with the creative soft synth before I tried installing Roland MPU-401 support - which my PCMidi card to my surprise was completely happy to be driven by, so I followed it up with the SC-55 MkII ^^

I find it exceedingly cool how the Win 3.1 midi mapper allows you to divide midi channels between different midi devices if you so desire. So you could have drums from one and the rest from another for example.

To top it all off we installed Quicktime 2.03 😂 and did our first foray into Myst, the goal of the whole exercise to explore its various mysteries 💕 Will be returning to it a little later!

The Myst Graph: A New Perspective on Myst

Have mixed feelings about these kinds of things. Yes part of me interested on the theory but don't want to ruin my memories of using Myst back in the day. Hard to describe just how beautiful and different this "game" was at the time. It was a work of art I was just a very happy virtual tourist wandering around taking in the views.
