I've been working on cars more or less continuously since I was in high school including several stints as a full-time #mechanic, and I have never seen an engine as absolutely rubbish in as many ways as the BMW/Mini/Peugeot "Prince" engine. Prince of Darkness, more like.

Never, ever EVER buy a Mini Cooper unless you intend to get rid of it before the warranty runs out.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬! 💫
At last week’s @girlsday 26 students had the chance to explore careers in science that are still often considered “male-dominated.” They experienced hands-on research at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy – not only as astronomers, but also as electrical engineers and precision mechanics. 👩‍🔬🔧💡
🛠️ They could choose from four exciting workshops:
🔭 Pulsar Workshop: 10 students worked with real data from the 100-meter radio telescope in Effelsberg 📡 to search for pulsars – which can even be used to test Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Our colleagues provided worksheets and the necessary software for the task. 💻
🤖 Line Follower: 4 participants soldered and assembled an autonomous robot that follows a pre-set line – all by itself! And yes, they got to take it home with them. 🔩✨
⚡ Tesla Transformer: 8 girls built their very own Tesla transformer – strong enough to light up a fluorescent tube just by being nearby – without any contact! 💥💡
🧩 Puzzle Workshop: 4 students crafted their own aluminum puzzle pieces in our workshop and learned that massive structures like radio telescopes are built from many small, custom-made parts – not mass-produced ones. 🛠️🔍
Curiosity, energy, and lots of tech – thank you to everyone who made this day so special! 💜👩‍🔧 We’re already looking forward to next year!

A rare sighting in the wild: a Jeep/Chrysler repair shop in Japan—through a slightly off-brand window decal that seems to say “SLERepe.” 🚗🔧

Seen through a single street-level window, the unmistakable front of a Chrysler or Jeep vehicle peeks from within a workshop. The signage on the glass, partially obscured and mirrored, awkwardly reads "SLERepe"—a mangled echo of the Jeep brand logo. The white wall exterior is tinged with years of grime near the ground, and the reflection of the opposing apartment block adds a layer of local texture.

Progress pictures on the Jeep!

My partner Asenzi did most of the work here, since she took it apart in the first place. In a nutshell, a friend hired her to pull the HVAC box from this car and move it to his (identical) car. I bought this one off of him for next to nothing, and Asenzi assembled another HVAC box from a mix of new parts and junkyard pieces. She's doing most of the work putting the interior back together, while I focus on the brakes, transmission, suspension, and wheels/tires.

We got about halfway done before we ran out of light, and I'm hoping we'll have the interior back together by this weekend. At that point I'll have the brake components, and while I'm replacing those I'll also remove the previous owner's ill-advised 2" lift kit (ugh). Then I can take it for a test drive and start troubleshooting the transmission!

Always nice to keep a vehicle out of the junkyard!

The current state of the interior. The main dash has been installed, but we're still missing a lot of trim pieces, the glovebox, the gauge cluster, and the center console. In addition, the steering column isn't attached and is just dangling loosely. Asenzi is just barely visible off to the left, sorting through some parts.
An interior picture from the same angle, but with the HVAC blend box installed. it's a massive component, and takes up nearly 50% of the space between the dash and firewall. Lots of intricate linkages (for controlling the blend of hot/cold air and what vents the air is routed to) are visible.
The starting point - this is the interior when we took possession of the car. The entire dash and HVAC blend box is missing, along with the center console. However, the rest of the interior (seats, carpet, trim) is in pretty good shape.

Looks like the missus's Pilot has an exhaust leak. Well, sounds like it does might be a more apt phrase.

I was really hoping all the noise was from the heat shield, which was split; but alas, got it out - but that was only a source of 'a lot of noise'.

Nothing is loose, I can't quite get in there to tell, but I really hope this is a gasket and not a bad cat. That sucker is expensive.

No time to driveway this, off to the muffler shop :(
