We are watching V for Vendetta - well, partly for contemporary news and partly as an instruction manual, I guess. Anyway, the death of Stephen Fry: very cheering. (Hey, I know it's an ambiguous character, but it is interesting to me how much of the character's moral ambiguity has ... lessened because of extra-textual factors).

I've probably been on about watching it again for years but favourite movie for me: Life is Beautiful. I love the slapstick, the beauty of it, the style it is produced in, but the philosophy and ideas behind it are perfecto to me. It comes right at you: Life is Beautiful. In the middle of one of our worst manifestations, one can and must still say, Life is Beautiful.

Reactions to Corridor of Mirrors (1948), which I watched at the end of last week.

I wonder if this film could be read as about the tension between… I don’t know, Romanticism and formalism, neo-classicism. An ex-painter in an empty mansion, desperate to recapture the past (and a mythical love from another age).

And lots of mirrors, bodies, malingering, beautiful spaces with hidden layers.
