Mark Sanders<p>Cover mechanicals complete and submitted! We keep chipping away at this 600 page weight. Mark Sanders<p>I'm 200 or so pages into layout and finding my rhythm. I can now layout a spread in 2-3 hours. Granted this is only initial layout and all pages are printed and tuned typographically before final review. But still, getting step 1 done fairly quickly is progress! <a href="https://mas.to/tags/meggs7ed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>meggs7ed</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesignhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesignhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/designhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>designhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesign</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/bookdesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bookdesign</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/pagelayout" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pagelayout</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/typography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>typography</span></a></p>
Mark Sanders<p>This all seems pretty reasonable. It is interesting to put a current monetary value on many of the items included in Meggs' 7th Ed., though. <a href="https://catalogue.swanngalleries.com/auction-catalogs/ART-DECO-AT-100-WILLIAM-CROUSE-COLLECTION?saleno=2702&amp;viewby=Lot_asc&amp;pg=1" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">catalogue.swanngalleries.com/a</span><span class="invisible">uction-catalogs/ART-DECO-AT-100-WILLIAM-CROUSE-COLLECTION?saleno=2702&amp;viewby=Lot_asc&amp;pg=1</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/designhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>designhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesignhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesignhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/meggs7ed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>meggs7ed</span></a></p>
Mark Sanders<p>Let the design proofing begin! We've got some design system adjustments and all the fussy typographic corrections to make, but having the weight of 4 chapters in our hands feels good. <a href="https://mas.to/tags/meggs7ed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>meggs7ed</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/designhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>designhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesign</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesignhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesignhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/process" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>process</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/inprogress" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>inprogress</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/bookdesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bookdesign</span></a></p>

Mark Sanders<p>Today is a BIG day. Almost 5 years to the day from when we began the project, we have submitted the complete 1st draft of the 7th ed. of Meggs' History of Graphic Design. Will share further thoughts about the project and this milestone soon, but for now... whew! <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesign</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesignhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesignhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/meggs7ed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>meggs7ed</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/designwriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>designwriting</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/designhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>designhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/firstdraft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>firstdraft</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/milestone" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>milestone</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/designwriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>designwriting</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/typography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>typography</span></a></p>
Mark Sanders<p>Managed to layout 3 spreads today (a PR!). The type and design system are coming together. Thinking we may have 500 or pages total once all is in place. There's something hypnotic about page layout and design production. And at the end of the day there's measurable progress. <a href="https://mas.to/tags/designhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>designhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesignhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesignhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/meggs7ed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>meggs7ed</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/pagelayout" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pagelayout</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesign</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/bookdesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bookdesign</span></a>. <a href="https://mas.to/tags/typography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>typography</span></a>.</p>
Itamar Medeiros<p>Paola Antonelli has a litmus test for worthy design. People often ask the Museum of Modern Art’s senior curator of architecture and design how she decides what to add to the museum’s collection, and she gives them simple instructions: “Close your eyes and think, If this object did not exist, would the world miss out?” she says. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/designhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>designhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/designbusines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>designbusines</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/MoMA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MoMA</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/feedly" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>feedly</span></a> <a href="https://www.fastcompany.com/91268843/moma-paola-antonelli-pirouette?partner=rss&amp;amp;utm_source=feedly&amp;amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;amp;utm_campaign=rss+fastcompany&amp;amp;utm_content=rss" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">fastcompany.com/91268843/moma-</span><span class="invisible">paola-antonelli-pirouette?partner=rss&amp;amp;utm_source=feedly&amp;amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;amp;utm_campaign=rss+fastcompany&amp;amp;utm_content=rss</span></a></p>
Itamar Medeiros<p>I can't believe Photoshop is celebrating 35! When I first got into my undergraduate program in <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/GraphicDesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GraphicDesign</span></a>, one would go to design school to work on Print material. Photoshop was a "niche" software: you would edit your photos on it and then import them into other software (Freehand, PageMaker, CorelDraw, QuarkXPress). Then the web boom came, and you could not create websites without it! Happy birthday, Photoshop! <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/design" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>design</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/designhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>designhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/feedly" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>feedly</span></a> <a href="https://www.dpreview.com/news/5807387805/adobe-celebrates-35-years-of-photoshop-with-a-new-video-series" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">dpreview.com/news/5807387805/a</span><span class="invisible">dobe-celebrates-35-years-of-photoshop-with-a-new-video-series</span></a></p>

Mark Sanders<p>And so it begins. With the manuscript ~90% complete, we begin design production of nearly 600 pages. A grid and type system will guide us, 1 spread at a time. Mark Sanders<p>Not being a design historian, but writing/revising a major text on this topic has me discovering unusual twists and turns. Like Jan Tschichold. </p><p>Widely credited as an originator of modern, Swiss typography and layout, he had a change of heart. Working at Penguin Books 1947, "he believed designers should draw upon the whole history of design to create solutions expressing content" as evidenced by this brochure for The Pelican History of Art. <a href="https://mas.to/tags/meggs7ed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>meggs7ed</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/designhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>designhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesignhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesignhistory</span></a></p>
Mark Sanders<p>Writing about Herb Lubalin today for the new chapter 'Refining' is a great reminder of how daring and bold he really was. Eros and Avant Garde magazines redefined boundaries of what print and editorial content can be—challenging, critical and even crass. I've always thought of him as a type designer, but that practice contributed to a much greater whole.</p><p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/designhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>designhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/graphicdesignhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>graphicdesignhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/herblubalin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>herblubalin</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/erosmagazine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>erosmagazine</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/meggs7ed" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>meggs7ed</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/editorialdesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>editorialdesign</span></a></p>
