#civilization

What we need to understand if we want to keep our #civilization is: We are not preventing #change because we are not acting. Many of us are trying our best, but it doesn't change anything. Why? Because a complex #social #system always reproduces its behavior. That is a law of nature. The only way to fundamentally change such a system is to destroy it and create a new one. This has happened often enough in the history of mankind. It will also happen to our civilization.

A quotation from Jefferson

If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be. The functionaries of every government have propensities to command at will the liberty and property of their constituents. There is no safe deposit for these but with the people themselves; nor can they be safe with them without information. Where the press is free, and every man able to read, all is safe.

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) American political philosopher, polymath, statesman, US President (1801-09)
Letter (1816-01-06) to Charles Yancey

The biggest problem of our #civilization is that we are doing the wrong thing more and more perfectly. All our difficulties are a consequence of this one problem: the destruction of #nature, the declining quality of #life, the feeling that we as #societies are at a loss, that we as individuals do not really feel #happy, the growing gap between #rich and #poor...
All these developments are the result of our ongoing efforts to do the wrong thing better and better.

There's been a pattern of me posting something critical of civilization and someone getting *really* mad and coming for me in replies. I was pondering this the past couple of days after the latest iteration of this phenomenon.

I came to the conclusion that the folks doing this are *terrified* and reacting like a wild creature that's backed into a corner. Lashing out in anger as a form of defense against the possibility that the Leviathan they've been embedded in since birth is actually a force for their destruction wrapped in a shiny package.

I was discussing this with my eldest, a very perceptive spawn of mine and he said it's existential dread on the level of eldritch horror. I can't say he's wrong.

The problem is, how can we have a discussion about this with people in feral wounded animal mode? It's one of the reasons I've come to the conclusion that we're not going to be able to walk away like the inmates of prior civilizations were able to do. We're going to have to ride the falling giant to its inevitable end and forage off its rotting corpse in the aftermath.

This makes me really melancholy. But then I remember back to when I was assimilating all the anti-civ stuff I was reading about a decade and a half ago, and how it made me feel like I was losing it for a while until I found a balance in my head, and I guess I can't fault folks for reacting like this. I've long lived on the knife edge of paradox of various kinds and am no stranger to navigating the cognitive dissonance that occurs while figuring out how to fit it into my worldview. Most folks just aren't, and can't, and we'll just have to sink or swim when the time comes.

There is no such thing as a "peaceful" civilization. Civilization is *always* built on oppression, theft, genocide (whether human or non-human). Rule of law is always at the threat of having a gun pointed in your face. People need to quit thinking civilization is some kind of benign state that keeps a peaceful world.

I hate to bring up everybody's hated FBI snitch and transphobe but this film (despite the messenger) made by @franklinlopez covering Derrick Jensen's anti-civ thoughts, is still apt. Ignore the messenger and take in the message.

I say it again in all-caps in case it didn't sink in: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PEACEFUL CIVILIZATION

#Climatechange is not being addressed effectively, #speciesextinction is not seen as a problem, #war wreaks havoc on land and increases wasting of #energy; electric energy consumption increase is rising; sc #greenenergy does not work on a global scale, because the amount of materials needed does not exist; but even if, taking what's still there destroys even more of the habitat needed for human #survival.

#Civilization is going down, and rightfully so.

#Civ7 on #PS5 feels like Cyberpunk 2077 levels of buggy. Here’s stuff I’ve experienced.
- the Unicode bug in the screen caps below
- the resource assignment screen sometimes just glitches and won’t let me assign anything. I press o to back out, R1 to go back in, and it works
- I played multiplayer the first time last night and for half the session my friend did not get tooltips popping up. They’d work for a while, then they’d stop. We rebooted, reconnected and they just wouldn’t stay.

Thanks to the success and popularity of the recent Fallout TV show many fallout players are returning to their favourite Fallout game. However what if you wanted to play a #4X turn based strategy game set in the #Fallout universe? Well fear not, CivFanatics and the #Civilization series has you covered! :)

While there are no Fallout mods for #Civ2 per se, there are plenty of similar Apocalyptic wasteland scenarios that many of which can be found here: forums.civfanatics.com/threads

However the best ones are for good old #Civ3 where Thorgrimm created the truly remarkable Fallout The Rebirth of Civilization total conversion scenario based on the earlier Fallout games. Then Sudo007 took Thorgrimm's work and created a Fallout Liberty scenario based on Fallout 3. Both suffered some frustrating bugs however in 2024 Fallible_Fiend patched both scenarios with bug fixes and new features.
