The passing of Gene Hackman made me interested in the actor again, and then I saw that he made a movie with Tony Scott, from Jerry Bruckheimer about surveillance. Recent fascination of mine with Michael Bay and stuff related to him, like the fact that a lot of the style of Bay came almost directly from Tony Scott. And the fact that Bay worked wit...

blenderdumbass . orgEnemy of the State 1998 is very relevant for today

An excellent series that is worth your time and patience.

The characters are real and believable, the cultural setting sufficiently resptful as well as acknowledging how bonkers Japanese TV can be, and more than enough surprises about crime and technology.

I would have liked more reveal of Suzie Sakamoto’s past, however.

Still, far more good than bad here.

Highly recommended.

Tonight’s movie is the Norwegian disaster flick “The Quake” the sequel to “The Wave”. This one’s a little slow to get going but once it does, it’s a thrill ride. They should make more of these. Subject Kristian and his family to every disaster. Meteor hit, volcano, tornado, hurricane, alien invasion!

Tomorrow is #Comedon day, and we'll be watching Preston Sturges's 1941 satire Sullivan's Travels.

As previously described in the paper handouts you received at orientation (you did attend orientation, right?) last week's film, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, took its title from the Sturges movie.

Sturges was the first Hollywood screenwriter to successfully transition to directing and the first person to get the "written and directed by" credit. His screwball comedies are legendary and every single one of them skewers social and class assumptions of their day.

CW: It's from 1941 so odds of some outdated views or language are good.

The watch party starts Thursday April 3 at 6:00 PM PT.
