#FinishedReading #AnneBrontë 's 1848 novel of domestic cruelty and escape. Huntingdon is a devastatingly sustained portrayal of a 'can't you take a joke, love?' sniggering, if superficially charming, bully, and the passages of the initially naive Helen alternately suffering through, or trying to stand up to, him are compelling. I'm less convinced by the character of Markham who frames the story, and Anne's extremely strongly expressed (if somewhat unconventional) Christianity isn't exactly my thing. Definitely worth the read. #Bookstodon @bookstodon

A beautiful, deeply personal essay on racism from SFF writer Andy Duncan, freely available from the Journal on the Fantastic in the Arts. I've met Andy on multiple occasions, and have even been his student at a 3-day workshop on writing literary criticism on science fiction. And I love his fiction and nonfiction.

I am in the mood for a good, detailed microhistory on some random topic. In the past I have read books on the history of salt, the color blue, Dutch tulips, where do clothing donations actually go, soccer and it's historical relationship to global politics, history of the alphabet, etc.

So, watcha got for me?

I need a new book.

Prompt 27 - a book set at a luxury resort - April 4, 2025 - this novel is a thriller set in a remote island resort. The characters arrive at the resort before opening to film a reality TV show. Who will be the one perfect couple? Except, things aren't as luxurious as they seemed, and things take a dark turn. Ruth Ware spins a thrilling tale with a great ending.

My first Austen.
Quite different from what I expected.
Everything seems to be about wealth and money.
Interesting and challenging - I just did not get a few sentences and verbs and expressions.
And I think we overanalyse and project too much when reading classics.

Mansfield Park, Jane Austen
