MoonfireGot the bulk of the book converted but I'm too tired for punch list that appeared (mostly because I have to remember some older code and how I implemented it).Thankfully, I have a lot of Perl and Node scripts that can take a <code>.docx</code> file, convert it using <code>pandoc</code>, and then split it apart into one chapter per file while normalizing quotes, entity objects, and jamming the metadata into the YAML information.All in all, took me about 24 minutes from opening the document to getting it all out in a consistent way that allows the author to keep sending me <code>.docx</code> corrections and me pulling it into my format.(And editors keep using <code>.docx</code> so I have round-trip scripts that take my format, make them docx, and then pull it back out in the normalized format so I get a pull request created to review.)I don't charge for updating my library, so probably only 6-12 minutes to finish up the book for final proof once I find (and document) the issues. Unless the author wants a theme to the pages, then that takes longer (I work in six minute increments).I'm not the greatest at converting books, mostly because I have my way, but it works for me? So I had to put in a little documentation on setup which lead to me realizing I never migrated mfgames-writing-tools-js over to <a href="https://src.mfgames.com/mfgames-writing-js/mfgames-writing-js" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://src.mfgames.com/mfgames-writing-js/mfgames-writing-js</a> like I thought I did. So... package three was bringing MfGames Writing Tools up to date. This package is one of my "big" projects that I've been maintaining for almost a decade that takes a novel written in Markdown + YAML and transforms it into EPUB and PDF files to create good-looking books. 🇨🇦🇩🇪🇨🇳张殿李🇨🇳🇩🇪🇨🇦So, in a discussion on a Lemmy instance¹ someone asked about specialty covers on notebooks instead of reusable notebook covers and why people didn't make the latter anymore. Curious about this (I was never really a user of notebook covers because the ones I saw were always cheap plastic garbage with twee Japanimation covers or the like), I went digging around on Taobao to see if there were more adult variations on this and found … well at first I didn't find many. It turns out I just didn't have the right words. Upon learning the correct vocabulary, I found plenty (a listing attached as an example). I also ordered one, plus a horribly cheap notebook core, to test them out and see how they solve the notebook size issue. I've got another, larger (350-page!) notebook coming, as well as another cover, so there will be another photo-essay on the topic in the near future.
