When the United States, Canada and Mexico were awarded the 2026 World Cup in 2019, tariffs and immigration were in the background, with the countries' longstanding alliances taking the spotlight; the unity of the three nations was the theme articulated by Carlos Cordeiro, then-president of the U.S. Soccer Federation. The Guardian · The 2026 World Cup, heralded as a uniter, is facing divisive road blocksBy Leander Schaerlaeckens

What does "World Cup" mean?

I love sport and there's room for more, but it seems the term World Cup has regressed to mean "best tourney" at the international level

No, the World Cup is the game that the whole world plays or is represented.

When the Cricket WC is on, the USA and don't even know its happening, when its basketball - NZ hasnt a clue.

They can have international cups and even call it world cup, but when I say *The* World Cup - there's only one. #worldcup #soccer #football #sports
