I love sport and there's room for more, but it seems the term World Cup has regressed to mean "best tourney" at the international level

No, the World Cup is the game that the whole world plays or is represented.

When the Cricket WC is on, the USA and don't even know its happening, when its basketball - NZ hasnt a clue.
