Railmaps<p>Today's historic photo of the day: 38 years ago today, VLine diesel N467 hauls a Melbourne-bound Maryvale Paper <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/train" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>train</span></a> through Maryvale Exchange Siding, east of Morwell, Vic, April 17 1987.</p><p>Morwell is in Victoria's Latrobe Valley region, 144km east of Melbourne on the railway to Traralgon, Bairnsdale and Orbost. Maryvale siding is on the eastern side of town where the broad gauge Maryvale Tramway branches from the main line and travels a few km north to a Paper Mill, owned at that time by APM.</p>

Reportedly, it was built in 1953 as Pittsburg &amp; Shawmut (PS) SW9 232. Tim Richards<p>Can't wait for the new rail line under Melbourne's CBD to open, it's much needed. I keep boarding Elizabeth Street trams headed for the hospital precinct &amp; Melbourne Uni which are absolutely packed, even in the middle of the day (I'm on one now). The GCR was the last new mainline railway built in the UK for 108 years until the opening of HS1 to Europe in 2007.</p>
