Amphimallon solstitiale

Seen from this angle and with this coloration (it may vary) the Amphimallon solstitiale beetle is not particularly pretty. It rather looks like an overweight cockroach.
iPhone 15 Pro main camera + homemade close-up focus lens

🇬🇧 A lapwing mobs a marsh harrier. Somehow, he wasn't as excited as I was to see a marsh harrier up close.

The male lapwing's job is to keep crows, birds of prey, cows, humans, etc. away from the nest and the female, which breeds in a shallow scrape in the ground.

The males are very conscientious and vocal.

Last year, I accidentally got too close to a nest, and the male flew circles around me and scolded me. At first, I really didn't get it and was happy that it was a great, relatively close photo subject. Only when he landed and gave me the "bird with a broken wing" display did I understand. I let him "lure" me away from the nest and then took a different route back. 🙂

Predator

I’m not sure what species of dragonfly this is, but it certainly caught the attention of the northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos). From the mockingbird’s perspective, their interaction seems to be going quite well!

"The Northern Mockingbird enjoys making its presence known. It usually sits conspicuously on high vegetation, fences, eaves, or telephone wires, or runs and hops along the ground. Found alone or in pairs throughout the year, mockingbirds aggressively chase off intruders on their territory." - allaboutbirds.org
