Arpeggio of Blue Steel se desarrolla en un futuro distópico donde, debido al calentamiento global, gran parte de la masa terrestre se ha perdido bajo el mar. En 2039, una misteriosa y poderosa flota de naves conocida como «La Flota de la Niebla» aparece y domina los océanos, imponiendo un bloqueo naval y aéreo mundial que aísla a las naciones7.
La historia se centra en Gunzō Chihaya, capitán de un grupo de corsarios llamado «Acero Azul», que opera el submarino I-401. Lo que hace única a esta nave es que posee un «Modelo Mental» llamado Iona, una personificación humanoide de la nave que ha desertado al lado de la humanidad79.
La trama sigue a Gunzō y su tripulación en su misión de entregar un arma prototipo llamada «ojiva vibratoria» a los Estados Unidos, la única nación con recursos para producirla en masa. Esta arma podría ser la clave para que la humanidad se defienda contra la Flota de la Niebla9.
Lo que hace destacar a Arpeggio of Blue Steel es su mezcla única de acción naval futurista, elementos de ciencia ficción y desarrollo de personajes. La serie explora temas como la inteligencia artificial, la lealtad y la naturaleza de la conciencia a través de los Modelos Mentales de las naves.
