For two simple reasons, both related to <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/colonialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>colonialism</span></a>:</p><p>1) Many people could identify as very different folks, but are pressed, or used to, identify as russians. This is true even for 100% non-russian people (think <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Tver" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Tver</span></a> <a href="https://zirk.us/tags/Karela" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Karela</span></a> as an extreme example), but many (most?) people in post-USSR also have mixed ancestry. Yet were always societally pressured to identify as Russians.</p><p>2) ...</p>
