boxd.itA ★★★★ review of Small Things Like These (2024)Christmastime. 1985. Ireland. A coal merchant sees a young woman being pushed into a convent against her will. He later discovers disturbing things happening at the convent in a town controlled by the Catholic Church. He struggles to decide what to do with the information he has learned.  This fictionalized account of Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries only scratches the surface as to the atrocities committed over two centuries but it still nevertheless packs a wallop.   That’s because of Cillian Murphy, as Bill Furlong, the Coal Man who uncovers something amiss and Emily Watson, as the Mother Superior of the Convent.

Having seen the TV series, I was interested in seeing what the source material was like. As expected, it was much richer an experience.

What I didn’t expect was how much more contemplative it was, for it delves far deeper into the racially-charged expectations of not just TV shows, but American society as a whole.

All of the show’s b-plots are gone, and here we must face the hero’s personal struggle for identity beyond Generic Asian Guy.

EXCELLENT!

boxd.itA ★★★ review of The Amateur (1981)Have to be honest - aside from John Savage giving an excellent performance, I think I rather preferred the Rami Malek version of Robert Littel’s book more Review here While Savage is given an extraordinarily good supporting cast, especially Christopher Plummer, Ed Lauter and Marthe Keller, they are given very little to do especially Plummer who is the second credited actor but who doesn’t show up until about 55 minutes into the film, does a lot of speaking in non-subtitled Czech and then shows up in English in the last 15 minutes of the film.  It is also directed in a

Tonight's movie was Aniara (2019).

Aniara is a bleak look at the downward spiral of humanity in a microcosm. A dark poetic allegory of humanity lost and rudderless in space and life.

This movie is a pure and original piece of sci-fi that is as haunting as it is frustrating. It sometimes gets lost in its own thoughts, but escapes that gravity enough to have glimmers of brilliance.

Rated 7 out of 10.
