Power, Purpose, and Historical Fiction — Meet Sam Foster

What does it mean to write #historicalfiction that’s both deeply researched and boldly personal?

In this new episode of Audio Signals #podcast on ITSPmagazine, I sit down with #author Sam Foster to talk about the creative process behind Thy Mother Is A Lioness, his newest work exploring powerful women in #Renaissance Italy and the hidden strength passed through generations.

We talked about:

🖋️ #Writing from experience vs. researching the unknown

📚 Blending truth with #fiction without rewriting #history

💡 #Creativity as a lifelong purpose—not just a profession

🖥️ Using #Substack to share stories directly with readers

It’s a story about #storytelling.

A reflection on identity, curiosity, and the drive to ask: Why?

How does your MC react when parents call?

Considering that Showshen's dad was arrested without trial and she can't contact him for over three months, she wants nothing more than some sign that he's not dead or tortured.

Showshen's mom accompanied her younger sister to her wedding in Samerkand so she's trying to get her father back before her mom returns/hears about it so if her mother were to come back before then, she'd probably panic over the situation.

George MacDonald Fraser (1925–2008) – author, historian, journalist, screenwriter – was born 100 years ago #OTD, 2 April, 1925

“His dedication to strongly researched stories, built firmly on a bedrock of historical fact, but always with an eye to the humour of a situation, was the core of what appealed to me”

Historical novelist Michael Jecks discusses MacDonald Fraser’s writing for the Royal Literary Fund:

The Royal Literary FundNot A Serious WriterHarry Flashman is a fictional character borrowed from a novel who purports to be telling the truth about real, historical events – an illusion supported by George MacDonald Fraser’s well-researched footnotes. Michael Jecks locates the realism at the heart of a series of historical novels masquerading as thrillers.

April 1: Do oyu include in-jokes, hidden messages, or Easter eggs in your writing?

There are a lot of easter eggs for the Chinese and Egyptian history nerds. I expect quite a few of my readers to get the Chinese easter eggs cause danmei has popularized Ancient Chinese literature and history, but the Egyptian stuff will be rarer since it takes place in that era after Byzantine occupation and before Islam.
