#Trump layoffs begin to erode #FDA drug review system

The Trump admin's #MassFirings at the FDA have removed employees critical to reviewing new #medicines, setting back years of effort to bring promising #treatments to #patients more quickly.

The FDA is slated to lose 3,500 employees under Secy of #HHS #RFKJr's massive *restructuring* of US #health agencies….

No plan—not his *MAHA* agenda, not efficiency, nothing—can realistically explain cuts like these. Instead, the #MassFirings don’t seem to be a means to an end on the way to overhauling American #health. They are an end in themselves.

It’ll take months, if not years, to fully appreciate the effect that the cuts will have on America’s scientific enterprise.

Even before he took office, #RFKJr warned #health ofcls that they should pack their bags, & on Tues, he defended the cuts: “What we’ve been doing isn’t working,” RFKJr posted. He [says he] is focused on “realigning #HHS w/its core mission: to stop the chronic #disease epidemic & Make America Healthy Again.” But instead of improving how the federal health bureaucracy works, RFKJr is throwing his agencies into #chaos.

Update. The Dept of Health and Human Services (#HHS) can no longer fulfill requests for records under the Freedom of Information Act (#FOIA), at least not without "exponentially" longer delays and backlogs. #RFKjr — who promised "radical transparency" — fired the staffers who handled those requests. A spokesperson said the layoffs will "streamline" the department and the work "will continue".

CMS’s work is almost entirely contracted out. IT component: resp for at least $750M of that. There's no way to cut this much w/o some🚨PARTS OF THE SYSTEM: CEASING TO FUNCTION. So they’ll come up with a proposed plan, warn about what'll break & wait to hear back.

#HHS had been assigned a total amount of savings from CXL contracts -of that total amount CMS was resp for just >$2.7B -amounted to 35% of CMS’s aver total spend on contracts from the years FY2023 & 2024.

TPM - Talking Points Memo · The Axe Rises Over Medicare and MedicaidBy Josh Marshall

Fed judge temporarily blocks $11B in Trump admin's cuts to #publichealth funding to states after 23 states & the DC sued to keep the funding intact.

The coalition of states sued the #HHS & RFK Jr, arguing that the💰is used for many "urgent public health needs," incl tracking diseases, funding access to vaccines & mental health & addiction services, & improving health INFRAs. The AGs allege that the🚨funding was "abruptly & arbitrarily terminated" on Mar 24.

Call your member of #Congress re: devastating cuts to #HHS. You need to enter your location to be directed to your reps. This script is a shade mild for my taste, and doesn't put enough emphasis on cuts to specific #health and #research programs, but you can add and improvise. 5calls.org/issue/hhs-health-hu

5 CallsProtect Public Health: Oppose HHS Workforce and Program Cuts ⭑ 5 CallsThe Trump administration is decimating our nation’s federal public health infrastructure at a devastating pace, making sweeping cuts to the Department …

"Teams that fulfilled requests for government documents lost their jobs on Tuesday as part of the Trump administration's 10,000-person staff cuts at the Department of Health and Human Services. Their work, mandated by Congress since the 1960s under the Freedom of Information Act or FOIA, gives the public a view of the inner workings of federal health agencies."

The Trump administration is requiring the Department of Health and Human Services to cut spending on contracts by 35%, HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon confirmed to NPR.

The spending cut is across all divisions of HHS – which includes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and other agencies.
