Everyone I know is pulling back, trying to both stock up on everyday essentials and to save money for unforeseen circumstances - esp disruptions in Social Security.

Gone are the days of shopping, going to the movies, and lots of eating out. We only buy what we need now.

Projects like insulating the upstairs are now on hold. Lots of small companies will be way worse off for the wear.

Rate expectations At the heart of that anxiety? A sharp increase in cost expectations. Consumers now anticipate prices will climb 6.7% over the next year, the highest expected change since 1981, despite a cooling inflation print in March. The surge reflects worries that President Trump’s sweeping reciprocal tariff policies, which pushed US tariff rates to 100-year highs, could send prices soaring. Indeed, signs of financial strain have already surfaced elsewhere. More Americans are raiding their 401(k)s to cover emergency expenses, while credit stress is mounting. In Q4 2024, the share of credit card accounts making only minimum payments — and those more than 90 days past due — both reached record highs, per the Philadelphia Fed.

@cobalt123 So yeah, proper drying and storage are crucial with peanuts. I actually picked up a proper food dryer a few months back, so I'll be using that to dry them (and will clean everything thoroughly afterwards).
