The Byrnes book of 1886 contains writeups and mugshot photographs for hundreds of criminals active in the 1880s (though little of interest to the American Mafia historian). It's 400-plus pages also feature discussions of police work and criminal justice, and methods used by criminals. The book includes brief bios of criminals executed at New York City's #TombsPrison from 1851 to 1886.
The 1969 reprint can be obtained through sellers of used books. A paperback reprint published in 2000 is also available. The original work can be accessed online at the Internet Archive https://archive.org/details/cu31924096989177

Arthur Train devoted an entire chapter of his 1922 book to the 1905 #Torsiello murder, the investigation by #Petrosino and the trial and punishment of Antonio #Strollo. The book included a photo of an alleged #BlackHand letter Strollo used in his defense.
