@menziesii Has me thinking about having an appreciation for cookbooks, whether or not I'm able to make the recipes from them. I especially appreciate those that are written as home cook memoirs (as opposed to more sanitized professional chefs). Here are some from the Asian diaspora.

One I got as a gift:
🌶 "Ammu: Indian Home Cooking to Nourish Your Soul" - I chose it after hearing about a different South Indian home cooking book on "The Splendid Table" podcast

Ones I gave as a gift:
🥥 "Coconut and Sambal: Recipes from My Indonesian Kitchen" - heard an interview by the Indonesian Australian author on "The Splendid Table Podcast"

🍲 "Melting Pot: Stories and Recipes from a Chinese American Daydreamer" - found on Asian Creative network

bookwyrm.socialAmmu - BookWyrmA new cookbook from the star of Netflix's Chef's Table and one of the world's most prominent female chefs Heart-warming and full of comforting aromatic Indian flavors: Indian food from home, cooked with heart Ammu is a collection of recipes from Asma Khan’s childhood, her Indian family kitchen. It is a celebration of where she comes from, of home cooking, and the inextricable link between food and love. It is also a chance for Asma to honor her ammu—mother—and to share with us the recipes that made her and rooted her to home. This book is a joyful celebration of memories of food, and its power to heal, restore, and comfort. It includes her ammu's comfort food from childhood, the recipes with which she was taught to cook, celebratory food for special occasions, and slow-cooked recipes passed through the generations of her family. The recipes and the memories she shares all possess something that is universal: food is a way for us to have this conversation about how similar we all are—how it connects us and unites us beyond differing appearances, accents, races and backgrounds. With stunning food and family photos, this cookbook is a must-have for cooks and lovers of Indian food.

I got a proof copy of the new version of "Culture is Bad for You: Inequality in the Cultural and Creative Industries" (now available!) and I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

If you work in culture in ANY way at all in the UK, you have to read this. It's actually a wonderful read because it's been written by researchers who write like humans.

It's also, y'know, fascinating and really important.

Read MODEL HOME by Rivers Solomon if you love quintessential queer black literature, haunted houses, fractured families, sprawling suburbs, loving cups of tea, gut-punching prose, late night sanctuary diners, Jenny Holzer's Abuse of Power, Mothers, dissociating, running away & the unexplainable.

Llevo un 20% de The Mercy of Gods y puedo entender ahora la devoción que despiertan James S.A. Corey.

Ever since ‘The Nakano Thrift Shop’, I have always picked up translations of Hiromi Kawakami’s novels. I love all her books, although wasn’t wholly sold on ‘The Third Love’ quite as much. This, however… this is her most accomplished and breathtaking work! Would highly recommend!

For Christmas, my brother & his gf gave our niece a board book called The Story of Rap. It’s pretty good! Rhyming little bits that have a cartoon rendering of various foundational people, such as Grand Master Flash, on each page. Recommended! #BookRec #BabyBook

They also got her a park Adidas track suit, 3-6mo size. The cutest.
