Under capitalism, machines are not designed to lighten the burden for workers.

The role of machines is to cheapen commodities.

Cheaper commodities means more surplus-value for the capitalist.

By the time Marx was writing, machines were an established feature of the world, pre-existing and "objective." The nature & value of work had already been redefined by the machine age
