When the algorithm was time, the yelling was between acquaintances, and you could call bullshit with recourse to external validation, it made a sort of democratic discourse possible.

The engagement algorithm empowered the trolls. The trolls were exempted from moderation. External sources were censored, so communities of know-nothings were dominated by the say-so of the worst trolls. Now that the worst trolls run everything maybe the slop will turn out to be an improvement?
