I just got a phone call purportedly from Bluehost, referring to my URL specifically, saying it looks like there is a malware attack on my site. I have had a couple of unknown site views today. But there is no clear problem with my site, and I am aware that SiteLock and others are shady as hell.

Is this a scam? Is this a good reason to just shut down my old site and find a new host? Is this the kick in the butt I've been waiting for?

The caller emailed as the voicemail said she would, and the email is MUCH more sales pitch. "Our monitoring system flagged malware and/or vulnerabilities... this can result in serious risks like... we specialize in identifying and resolving..."

LOL, no.

Any suggestions for non-scammy webhosts, especially not in the US? I currently use self-hosted WordPress for my site, but have considered alternatives.

@aehdeschaine

I only know something about server hosts, i.e. you want a whole database and web server. Presumably that's a lot more than what you are looking for.

Personally I resisted ever going on WordPress or any of the other lower-side CMSs, I don't think the work involved is worth it. I just use Blogspot.

@richpuchalsky True, I don't need a server host right now. I'm open to alternatives (though I'm moving away from Google, not toward), but I've used WordPress for years. Depending on what I find for a new host, I may stay with WP or choose something else

@aehdeschaine Groosssss. Ugh. Yeah I left Bluehost in 2018 after several years there because the customer service got so bad. :/

I have a PorkBun web hosting account that I like a lot. They have an option for self-hosted WP. I use it for web dev experiments.

Right now my blog is a pika.page and I’m LOVING that experience, their blog post editing page is so wonderfully easy.

@hollie PORKBUN?! The name alone could win it for me...

I'm so glad Pika is working well for you! I hope it's a good home for some time.

I've been dragging my heels so hard on changing up my website. I'm taking this as a sign that it is time. My site is really relatively small, so I don't even mind starting from scratch. Gonna check the tech details with my husband this week and just DO IT. 😬

@aehdeschaine Another self-hosted option is pikapods.com, which I have an account at but haven’t used extensively! :) (No relation to pika.page)

Yeah Porkbun is my domain host, but they also do web hosting: porkbun.com/products/web_hosti

@hollie I love that they're in the PNW! I'd be interested in finding a non-US host, but it seems like a distant option. Local PNW is a great alternative!
