Related to my last post, I'm more motivated than ever to pursue alt-ac positions now. I have a PhD in literature, so research and writing skills would be my top strengths. I actually love teaching and have been doing it for a decade, but the working conditions have become untenable. Anyone fellow #PhDs who have a non-academic job they love? I don't even know where to start with my search terms.
@K_Gregz Welcome to the club! Can't say that the circumstances that brought us here are great, but the membership is top-notch.
Are there specific directions you're interested in? My current career has nothing to do with my history PhD (I'm a software dev), but I still freelance as a curriculum developer (which is a very good option either freelance or full-time) and know some market researchers who might be interesting to you.
@Zeb_Larson I started looking at jobs that involve writing--tech writing, copy editing, subtitling, etc, just because those are the job titles I know. I'd love a position that is more research based as well; I just don't know what those look like!
@K_Gregz The tricky thing I found with research positions was that they often call for a lot of quantitative skills that I don't have, but even so, good ones for folks like us are out there.
If you're not already, you ought to follow this newsletter: it has some good alt-ac positions in it every week. https://www.wordsofmouth.org/
If you're interested in curriculum development at all, I have some directions I could point you in, and I could connect you with a friend in marketing to get some info.
