One word is going to start coming up more & more as the Court of the Tangerine Tyrant tries to extend the influence of its decisions (such as those against diversity policies), and that word is:
'extraterritoriality' - the projection of national legal sovereign power into other jurisdictions.
The US has always used forms of extraterritoriality, but Trump may be about to make this a much more contentious issue as he tries to reach deep into other domestic jurisdictions.
@ChrisMayLA6 I will have to practice, unpronouncable word...
@EvelineSulman @ChrisMayLA6 Just use the easy to say synonym: greed
@alex_p_roe @ChrisMayLA6 greedy colonialism? Which is a pleonasm, I know
@EvelineSulman @ChrisMayLA6 Stick with greed At the end of the day, that’s what it all boils down to. And of course those on the US’s religious right know greed is one of the 7 deadly sins
Not that they ever bother thinking about this, sadly.
@ChrisMayLA6 Trinity College, Dublin - just one example of the US administration trying to reach outside their jurisdiction. Also Greenland…. https://www.thejournal.ie/us-government-universities-ireland-6662142-Mar2025/?utm_source=shortlink
@HarriettMB @ChrisMayLA6 @ChrisMayLA6 total overreach seeping out from deep-seated ignorance and disrespect of all and everything
@HarriettMB @ChrisMayLA6 You cannot be in favour of both DEI and meritocracy. By favouring DEI it means, by definition, you are against merit. Therefore I think Trump is doing a good thing, dismantling all the unjust DEI programs that do more harm than good in society.
Well, given the term 'meritocracy' was actually originally coined as a critique of the practice it identified, the issue is more how 'meritocracy' plays out; if it was a disinterested & no-prejudicial practice, then I think you would be right; however long and extensive experience & research has shown that systems that claim to operate on merit, actually seldom do, or use a metric of merit that is prejudicial in its definition...
@ChrisMayLA6 @HarriettMB That is why capitalism is so important. Not only does the market, over time, promote the best candidates. It also is ethically compatible with allowing companies to hire who they want.
The companies solely relying on white hillbillies, or black drugdealers, will over time, not perform so well compared with companies betting on merit.
Yes, meritocracy might not work perfectly in the short term, but that is not an
@ChrisMayLA6 @HarriettMB argument for replacing it with something worse, such as DEI. Two wrongs does not make one right.
Well, the difficulty is what other ways do you rectify prejudice?
@ChrisMayLA6 @HarriettMB Easy! You (as in the government) don't.
It is an individual question, and not one for the government, which only means another attack.
The individual who is treated unjustly can either go to work somewhere else, which sends a market signal that the place discriminating is not a good place. We must recognize, that discriminating is a right all of us have. We choose our friends and acquaitances, and in the same way,
@ChrisMayLA6 @HarriettMB company owners may choose freely.
The market corrects, over time.
Yes, this is where (we know) we differ...

"US president Donal Trump’s anti-inclusion policy orders have already had an impact in Ireland, with accounting firm Accenture, which employs thousands here, ending its equality and diversity programmes"
Irish governments - nationally and municipally - should end all contracts with Accenture. Its time for businesses to decide which side they are on - fascism, or freedom. #pickaside
@NovaNaturalist @HarriettMB @ChrisMayLA6
Thing is... History already taught us the answer to this very question.
Capitalism LOVES fascism.
@HarriettMB@beige.party
Overly simplistic, but return the money and tell them where to put it.
FFS there are enough problems with China "influencing" Academia, especially in the UK.
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us
@pandanus @ChrisMayLA6 They all need to tell him and his administration to FRO. A smart associate here this morning suggested on my timeline that countries receiving this kind of bullying and intimidation should respond by isolating the US embassy, not allowing any service or product in or out of it, until they lay off this. It is not the business of the US administration to interfere in other countries laws on DEI.
@ChrisMayLA6 If Greenland wants to see how the US treats its overseas possessions, it should take a look at Puerto Rico & the US Virgin Islands.

All Empires fall spectacularly.
As I recall, a certain Austrian had delusions of a new Romanesque Empire.
Now how did things end for him?
Sooner or later the Orange Orifice will push enough people too far and the whole lot will crumble.
This will domino into modern capitalism; but Feudalism lasted quite a while so not immediately.
On the bright side, the Climate Crisis is likely to kill us before the warring Emperors do.
Good luck to the reptiles & cockroaches, whatever's left for you.
