What would you do if you found a stowaway in your motorhome after a Chanel crossing?

One couple, found a stowaway, reported him to the police, but then subsequently were fined £1500 for negligence in checking their vehicle before undertaking the crossing home.

We might conclude that Border Force UK is trying to disincentives such reports; if the couple had let the stowaway abscond nothing would have happened.

its what's called a 'perverse incentive'!

The Guardian · UK couple fined £1,500 after reporting Channel stowaway found in motorhomeBy Nadeem Badshah

@ChrisMayLA6 Well now, my Google Photos pops up memories for me every day, and frequently those memories are based around a certain person, so I'll see something like, "Look back on Graham and Sam, through the years!"

And then I'll click on those memories, and more than a few photos of Sam show him wearing a Covid mask. Or even a masquerade mask because Sam and I went to a mutual friend's birthday party a few years ago, which was a masquerade ball.

In some of them, Sam is even wearing full face paint. Or, more mundanely, sunglasses.

So... yeah. I dunno how Google's facial recognition technology is so good if the police's isn't. :P

@ChrisMayLA6 personally I'd behave the same way as if I saw someone shoplifting food. But as I'd be on a ferry with a bikepacking rig not a motorhome I'd be very unlikely to find myself in that position!

@ChrisMayLA6 Then they wonder why people ignore telling others of the stupidity it causes and hurts the wrong people ...😡

@ChrisMayLA6 as I own nothing bigger than a bike, I rather doubt it'd be a problem for me.

I can't imagine anyone in that situation will report it going forward. That was a totally perverse decision

@ChrisMayLA6 That's what they get for calling the police on an undocumented migrant, refugee, or asylum-seeker.

I'd give the lad the numbers for Migrant Help and Refugee Council.

@ChrisMayLA6 I read the story and thought, wow this is so arse about face. If I were ever in the position I’d probably offer them a hot meal and let them go on their way.

@H4Heights

Indeed, as would many; it was the perverse incentive aspect I found intriguing.... its almost like Border Force wanted to encourage people to keep it quiet - which I might applaud but seems to be counter to their expressed policy

@ChrisMayLA6
Next time: give them some snacks and send them on their way.
@skolima

@ChrisMayLA6 Government claims the fine is for negligence not smuggling. Just realised where Starmer can make a staff saving - the idiot who sent the fine
