Emeritus Prof Christopher May

Noam Chomsky offers a thought for your weekend.... as in the Court of the Tangerine Tyrant they yell 'drill baby drill'!

@ChrisMayLA6
people who are harming other people have to be accused and then sentenced. So it is our duty to do so. Stop them! Don't apply improper violence like them, but stop them. If we are standing together we are able to stop them. Let's join to do so!

@fra

Hmmm... fine sentiment, which I agree with, the more difficult Q, is how?

@ChrisMayLA6
First of all people have to join, to build up power. This leads to unity, unity on street with protest. Much like the late 60s. People were heart. So this could be a first step, isn't it?

@ChrisMayLA6
That's my favorite as it is democratic. It is not wise to use the same evil measures the just inaugurated people are using. You don't want them to be supported by unwise measures...

@ChrisMayLA6 @fra Better to do mutual aid, organize things like food kitchens, free stores, shelter. Join your local food not bombs or if there is none the church food drive will do. Talk to people there about your worries and that you want others to be safe and cared for. Make community, create movements of resistance from there, and then go further. But start with action, talk (and protest) is cheap, action is worth more.

@GLaDTheresCake Exactly. I also think that people who are really serious about nipping things in the bud, should be taking notes on the French Resistance and others who were able to defy Hitler and his partners in der Kriminalität ( partners in crime) for so long.

@ChrisMayLA6 Drunk comes to mind. Not 'drunk' as in 'consumed too much alcohol' but drunk on something inside nevertheless.

@ChrisMayLA6 isn’t the word simply “libertarian”?

@ChrisMayLA6 The name given to them by Tolkien was: Nazgûl

I think it is pretty accurate (minus the immortality):

> They were nine Men who had succumbed to Sauron's power through wearing Rings of Power, which gave them immortality but reduced them to invisible wraiths, servants bound to the power of the One Ring and completely under Sauron's control.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazg%C

They are not men any longer. They have no free will. They are completely subdued by their circumstances and the power they wield.

The only solution to this is Luigi.

@ChrisMayLA6 I'd call them the people who have all the reasons to believe that whatever they do they won't be held accountable and if the world as we know it falls apart they will stand on the very top of the pile of debris. Why should they care?

Other than that - given the Chomsky's views on Ukraine- Russia relations and the aforementioned Balkans I'm deeply indifferent to whatever wisdom he chooses to impart on us mere mortals.

@ChrisMayLA6

A very spot on remark.

They are like a cancer, a progressive aggressive disease.

Basically for the good of humankind and our future they need to be removed.

And that, in fact, has been done before…

@NotRappaport

Ha ha, I'm not sufficient enough of a Trekkie - had to Google that, but yes, why not!

@ChrisMayLA6

Chomsky ignored this very thing when it came to the CCP because it complicated his worldview. He lost his legitimacy a long time ago.

@contrasocial

Yes, I've always been a bit ambivalent about Chomsky, as anyone who has seen hime deployed in student International Relations essays would be, but it was, I thought, a good stand-alone statement

@ChrisMayLA6 absurd to see some of the comments about Chomsky above, but whatever floats your boat I guess.

I miss his voice terribly 😢 Wish he was still able to share his analysis and wisdom with us, but sadly those days are probably gone. But I will always have the utmost respect to him for how much he taught me about the world, power structures and the media.

@ChrisMayLA6 i think "sociopath" fits the bill pretty well "Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) or sociopathy is a lifelong mental condition characterized by a chronic pattern of manipulating, exploiting, and violating others' rights, often without remorse. People with ASPD may exhibit impulsive, irresponsible, and criminal behavior, and may struggle to maintain relationships". The fact money is involved here is simply the capitalistic context which focuses and exacerbates the condition.
